In 1976, the Chicago Urban Transportation District planned to demolish the iconic elevated loop that runs through downtown Chicago and to replace it with two subway lines. The plan was ultimately cancelled due to the inflation of the 1970s and the Loop crash of 1977, which convinced Chicago's leaders that it was more cost-effective to fix the system rather than to make grand subway plans.  This was featured in Block Club Chicago.
