Baltimore Transit Co. was the last major private streetcar operator in Baltimore City and surrounding areas.  This map depicts the Baltimore Transit Co. at the tail end of the streetcar era, shortly after the company was purchased by purchased by GM-owned National City Lines. Starting in 1947, National City Lines, with the support of Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, worked to replace the streetcars with buses starting in 1947.  National City Lines and Mayor D'Alesandro hoped that by replacing the streetcars with buses and redesigning Baltimore's downtown to favor car traffic, the city's traffic problems could be solved.  The last streetcars would run in 1963.
