Montreal had half a dozen plans for a rapid transit system before the Metro was actually built. This is the 1953 plan which was put forth during the late Grande Noirceur period, but political support was lacking. At the time Montreal was in the middle of shutting down its old tramway system and mass transit wasn't in fashion at all. It took the construction of the Yonge subway in Toronto to light a fire under Montreal politicians' butts and to get their acts together. Ten years later, these plans were dusted off and revised into the modern Metro.

Stylistically, I've gone for an ultra-minimalist map here, in line with the stark High Modernist design style that was just coming into vogue at the time.
