Toronto Subway plan, 1945

Originally, the Toronto Subway was meant to be a mix of streetcar tunnel and subway. The 1945 master plan for Toronto's rapid transit system put a subway line under Yonge Street, and intended to use what would become the Line 2 as a tunnel to reroute streetcars underground.  That said, after the Second World War, traffic trends changed, and the TTC decided to put its second line under Bloor instead. 75 years later, all that exists of the proposed Queen Street subway consists of one empty platform at the Queen station on Line 1.
