Philadelphia Transportation Co. trolley, subway, and elevated system, 1940
Philadelphia's trolley system was truly massive before it was dismantled bit by bit in the last half of the 20th century, and it was a legitimate challenge to try to depict everything so that it'd fit on one poster. This is because the Philadelphia Transportation Co. was the heir to no less than 18 (!) different trolley companies. Because of that, there really was a trolley within a five-minute walk of most Philadelphians.
This map was a huge challenge to make, because of the sheer number and complexity of the routing patterns, especially in North Philly, where the street network is a confusing mess.
