Pittsburgh proposed SkyBus rapid transit plan, 1967

The prosperity and rapid technological advances of the postwar era encouraged engineers to freely develop technical innovations in rapid transit, many of which would have been dismissed as pipe dreams only a generation before. One of these innovations was the SkyBus system, developed by Westinghouse Electric in their Pittsburgh labs.  SkyBus was one of the first fully automatic rapid transit systems, and it was meant for first deployment in Westinghouse's hometown. The 1967 plan depicted here was developed in conjunction with the Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh’s transit operator.  SkyBus was ahead of its time - arguably too far ahead, as it fell victim to political bickering.
