Atlanta streetcar system map, 1940
In 1940, Atlanta was an important regional center with 300,000 inhabitants. The streetcar company was owned by the local electric utility, Georgia Power. This combination of business interests may seem strange today, but in the early 20th century such a combination was quite normal. Transit companies were the largest consumers of electricity when streetcars were introduced, meaning that the two monopolies - electricity and transportation - often went hand in hand. This situation would continue until the federal government forced utility companies to divest their streetcar holdings as an antitrust measure.
