New Orleans was the largest and most important city in the Southern United States until World War II.  As such, New Orleans has an unusually long history of mass transit.  The St. Charles Avenue streetcar line has run continuously since 1835, using horses, mules, steam locomotives, manual cable propulsion (like San Francisco’s cable cars), and since 1893, electric power.  This map has been derived from an 1875 guide book for visitors to New Orleans.
