In addition to the lost Red Car system which covered all of Southern California, Los Angeles also had the Los Angeles Railway (or "Yellow Car") streetcar system which covered the City of Los Angeles and nearby suburbs.  You used the Red Cars to get around the region; you used the Yellow Cars to get around the City of LA.  The Yellow Car system was the more heavily used of the two systems, but no great political debate happened over its salvation or conversion into a bus network. This is partly because the Red Car system had the potential to be converted into a proper rapid transit network, and partly because the Yellow Car system really was improved by converting most of it to bus.

The modern L.A. Metro bus network is the lineal successor of the L.A. Railway.
