Salt Lake City streetcar system map, 1921
The ancestor of the TRAX light rail system was the streetcar system run by the Utah Light & Traction Co. Utah Light & Traction ran streetcar service and served as the electric utility for the Salt Lake region. This map is based on a service guide published in 1921, at the height of the streetcar era - soon after, Utah Light & Traction would begin to swap out its expensive-to-maintain streetcar lines for buses, both electric and gasoline powered. By 1945, the last streetcar line was shut down, and no rail would run in Salt Lake City until the opening of TRAX in December 1999. A slight note: I've used the period correct names for the street grid. The city's streets weren't renumbered to the "400 W" format until 1936 in Salt Lake County, and 1947 in Salt Lake City.
