San Diego Electric Railway system map, 1918
The old San Diego Electric Railway was the predecessor to today's Trolley. It was part of John D. Spreckels's business empire. Spreckels started by inheriting a sugar company, and leveraged that money to take over the city's streetcar system, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego-Coronado ferry, and at one point all of Coronado Island. This map depicts the streetcar system in September 1918, and is based on materials that the San Diego Chamber of Commerce produced for soldiers and sailors stationed at the various military bases in and around San Diego. The San Diego Electric Railway, like most of its contemporaries, was shut down after World War II, with the last trains running in 1949.
