Immediately after World War II, monorail technology was all the rage.  In theory, it offered a space-age solution to the problem of urban congestion, and was touted as a way to get people out of their cars.  Gridlock, then as now, was a constant part of the Los Angeles landscape.  This is the initial monorail proposal that went to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority in 1954, as the old Red Car system was on its last legs.
