Metro Detroit's Regional Transportation Authority in 2016 proposed to build a busway system covering the core avenues of Greater Detroit: Gratiot, Woodward and Michigan, and it went before the voters to be approved.  This marked a major shift in Metro Detroit's thinking, as most plans before this had relied heavily on rail.  In some ways, given Metro Detroit's relative poverty, this was a good idea, but all the same it fell short at the ballot box.
