Minneapolis-St. Paul subway proposal, 1969
Much like the Beatles, knee-high boots and tie-dye, subways were in fashion in the 1960s. San Francisco had led the way in 1962, approving the construction of an advanced, automated rapid transit system now known as BART. And many other cities wanted to jump on the bandwagon, though in the end the only other cities to fully build out their subway systems were Washington DC and Atlanta. This was one of the plans put forth, designed by an engineer named Alan Voorhees for the Metropolitan Transit Commission.
As always, the biggest problem was funding. A subway is expensive to build, and in the end the politicians couldn't come to a consensus as to what technology to adopt. Voorhees considered no fewer than two different subway options in addition to three bus plans, and in the end the discussions never came to anything.
