Puerto Rico's planned island-wide rapid transit system, 1972

In 1972, governor Luis Ferré's plan 1972 was to build a 260 mile long, 120mph rapid transit system with a big terminal in San Juan's financial district (labeled here as Nuevo Centro) and to build new towns, or "pueblos nuevos," around the stations. This would prevent the kind of haphazard slum urbanization that happened elsewhere in Latin America. It got superb press, both nationally and internationally.

The problem was, Puerto Rican politicians have a long and dishonorable tradition of cancelling everything their predecessor did when they get into office. So naturally, when Gov. Ferré lost the election in November '72, his successor, Gov. Rafael Hernández Colón, quietly junked the whole thing.
