Washington, DC proposed subway map, 1909
Today the Capitol Subway is a curiosity, but when it first opened the Washington Post thought that the tiny Capitol Subway could be the nucleus of a modern rapid transit system. The Post published the proposal depicted here in December 1909, arguing that the subway would help “to lift the nation’s Capital City out of the ruck of mediocrity.”
Unusually, the Post proposed to reserve much of the subway’s capacity for official use, with separate trains would run for the general public. As part of this proposal, D.C.’s major public buildings and hotels would be retrofitted to have direct connections between their basements and the subway stations, so that federal workers could enter the train stations without dealing with the weather.
