The Washington Metro was the product of the residents of the District of Columbia revolting against downtown freeways.  Most American cities suffered large-scale city center demolitions after World War II, but not Washington DC, where freeway construction within the District proper was relatively limited. Instead, Washington DC built the second post-war metro system in the United States, after Bay Area Rapid Transit in San Francisco.  This is the Metro map from the Lost Subways book, showing the unbuilt freeways of downtown DC; for my traditional Metro diagram, click here.
