Buffalo was at its zenith in 1910. As the terminus of the Erie Canal, it was a major hub of commerce and industry, and had recently hosted a World's Fair only nine years before. Its proximity to Niagara Falls meant that electric power was cheap and plentiful, giving it the nickname "the city of lights."
