Philadelphia is an old city with a long mass transit history, and it was a major port of entry for European immigrants throughout the 19th century.  Due to industrialization and immigration, Philadelphia was undergoing explosive growth: between 1860 and 1880 the city gained 280,000 residents and was the second-largest city in the country.  In 1875, the city was planning to host the United States' first World's Fair in Fairmount Park.

The streetcars here were pulled by horses and mules, because the electric trolley hadn't been invented yet and the City had banned steam-powered streetcars.
