The Pittsburgh rapid transit system relies heavily on buses.  Unusually, the buses work quite well. A major factor in this is that many buses use dedicated roadways, called busways, to reach downtown.  This means that taking the bus is time-competitive with driving, and it also means that an enormous amount of rush hour express bus service can use the busways to bypass congested sections of expressway.  Pittsburgh's three light rail lines, with their downtown subway, are upgraded trolley-era lines which use modern equipment and a 1980s-vintage tunnel through downtown.  Finally, there are also two inclines, in light blue, which date to the 1870s.  These inclines are specialized railways which ascend the incredibly steep slope of Mt. Washington south of downtown. (The Duquesne Incline, the newer of the two inclines, only travels 800 feet horizontally, but climbs 400 feet vertically.)
